Wanted: Week 1

Holiday Gift Guide: For The Perfect Gentleman

Holiday Gift Guide: One for the Kiddos

There's no getting around the fact that kids are fun to shop for.  Their clothes are adorable, their toys are fun and- if they're smart like my nephew, Blake- they make a big deal out anything you give them...which in turn makes you want to buy them more.  For our first gift guide of the season, I picked out a few nifty items I think kids and parents alike will love....it's almost too much cute for one post.  Honestly, my face hurts from smiling.

Puppy Love

I've got some fun news for you!  I met someone yesterday and it was love at first sight.  He's adorable, relaxed, sweet as can be and he makes me smile like crazy.  Also, he is a dog...as in an actual canine puppy.  But he's perfect so I was nonetheless thrilled to make his acquaintance.  Turns out my brother and his roommates decided to welcome a pet into their home and my new buddy is the lucky one they chose.  They haven't decided on a name yet (though I cast my vote for Indy...as in my main man, Dr. Indiana Jones), and I wasn't able to get a great picture of him today but I'll post one soon!  For now, all I can tell you is he's a hound, shepherd mix with hush puppy eyes, the cutest floppy ears and a part brindle, part black coat.  And I love him.  And I can't stop searching for cute puppy toys.

The Essential Gift Guide to Teacher Treats

As of today, summer break is officially over for my kindergarten-teaching roommate (boooooo).  Since protesting the fact that she has to go back to work wouldn't get me far, I did the next best thing and put together a little back to school present for her.  For the record, I included some fun essentials I think the teachers in your life might really enjoy...maybe you have a friend who needs these treats, too!  

Since I planned ahead I was able to special order a few super fun items, the first of which was a set of personalized notecards from Tiny Prints.  I just love this pattern (some of you might recognize it from my Mom's birthday invitations), it's delightful and sweet just like Courtney.  

Perhaps my favorite items in the bunch are these pencils from Carbon Crusader.  I had them engraved with a quote that gets thrown around a lot in our house, first said by Downton Abbey's Dowager Countess of Grantham (AKA the best character ever on the best show ever).  

Next, I threw in a few traditional teacher items.

An apple...

...the most practical way I could find to consume coffee...

...and a small container filled with on-the-go Nutella packets.  Because even the back to school blues don't stand a chance against Nutella.

Once I made and put on the labels, all that was left to do was put everything in a pretty kraft paper bag and have the patience to wait until today to give it to her (the hardest part of the process, by the way).     

Moral of the story: whether you do it with a bag of gifts, a little note or a smile, make sure you encourage the teachers you know and love and thank them for all their hard work.  They sure do deserve it!

Gift Guide: Happy Housewarming!

One of my very best friends and her husband (make that two of my very best friends...Anthony is the man) just bought their first home and Lord knows I wasn't about to show up empty handed when they moved in.  That would pretty much be against my religion.  Nina and Ant are two of my childhood friends, the most adorable couple of all time, and simultaneously the best and worst people to buy stuff for.  The best in that they're so sweet and grateful for any and everything, the worst in that you'll never know if they love what you gave them or hate it with the passion of 1,000 burning suns cause they're just so nice.  That being said, I tried to stick to items every new home needs that are also universally wonderful...fresh flowers, extra virgin first cold pressed olive oil, chocolate, dish towels, a candle and a delicious bottle of red wine.  After taking a nice long look at my little basket of treats I realized I had a pretty good housewarming template on my hands, so I thought I'd share.  What's your favorite housewarming present to give?  What's the best one you ever received?  Do tell!

Q and A: Anniversary Present

If there's one thing that gets me pumped up for the day, it's the chance to answer a reader question!  It's one of my favorite parts of this gig.  Here's one I got just the other day:


I am in a dilemma and could use some creative words of advice. I am approaching my one year wedding anniversary in October, my dilemma being I want to give my husband something special and I’m stuck as to what to get him. We are going to FL and will be doing a special dinner but I wanted to add a little something else. He is not a jewelry guy, very laid back. So my selections I feel are narrowed down a lot. Do you have any recommendations or can you suggest anything else I could do to make it special?

Well first of all, Happy Anniversary!  While I don't have a lot of experience in anniversary present shopping, I want to say you've come to the right place.  What I lack in relationship history I make up for in sheer present-giving enthusiasm...giving people gifts they love is one of my great joys in life. :)

I definitely get your dilemma- whereas we're easily pacified by a sweet card and anything sparkly, boys are tricky to buy for...especially when it comes to sentimental holidays.  I think anniversary presents in particular are always sweeter when they're something you both enjoy or can do together...that way they're not just a celebration of your husband, they're a celebration of your relationship.  Think about your common interests but since the present is for him, try and steer clear of things he tolerates for your sake and lean towards things he's enthusiastic about (that goes without saying, of course, but if he's the sweet husband I suspect he is this might require a little intuition).  Here are a few options to consider.

1. For the Connoisseur - I love this idea...give your husband three bottles of wine- one to open for this year's anniversary, one for your five year anniversary and one for when you hit the big 1-0.  Make sure the five and ten year bottles are known for aging well- check out this guide if you need some help picking them out.

2. For the Academic - Oh to find a guy that loves museums.  Be still my heart.  If you were lucky enough to snag one, consider buying a one year membership.  If you live near a big city, you'll have lot of options...art, natural history (yay dinosaurs!), science- pick an area that interests him and you'll always have a fun activity or date night on deck.

3. For the Sports Fanatic - Treat him to tickets to go see his favorite team.  Even if sports aren't your favorite, be enthusiastic!  It'll be fun!

4. For the Candy Lover - Admit it, we're not the only ones with a sweet tooth.  At the end of the day, you just want to give him something he'll enjoy and if what he enjoys is chocolate...well...I say more power to him.  The mushy message might be a bit much but hey- why not?  It's sweet on many levels. :)

5. For the...well...I'm just going to say it...Nerd - This custom-made comic book cover (your faces and names) is perfect for the husband who loves superheroes, Star Wars or has expressed any interest in one day attending Comic Con.  From the Big Bang Theory candidate to the ironic Urban Outfitters wearing nerd, this one is a gem.

6. For the Board Gamer - If your beau is always up for game night, try this customize-able Monopoly-esque board game.  It lets you use your own photos and captions to make the game totally personalized.  Cool concept, right?

7. For the Movie Critic - Two word: Netflix subscription.

8. For the Coffee Addict - These custom made mugs are sweet and surprisingly guy-friendly to behold.  Sure, they're a bit sappy (see what I did there?), but they're a one of a kind piece and a really special gesture.

Father's Day Gift Guide

Happy Father’s Day week!  What do you mean you weren’t planning on celebrating Father’s Day until Sunday?  Are you crazy?  This is your Dad we’re talking about here!  I, for one, plan on celebrating my Dad starting now.  Of course, in the interest of full disclosure (and before you start thinking I'm a better daughter than I actually am) I guess I should tell you today is my Dad's birthday.  Reason enough to start the party early, don't you think?  I’ve bragged on him here and here (and many other places) but if you'll allow me one more moment to gush about him, I promise I'll make it quick.  I'm a Daddy's Girl through and through for at least a million reasons.  To name just a few- he's hardworking, humble, generous and makes me laugh harder than anyone in the world.  We're two volumes of the same book- just ask anyone who knows us. :) If I was with him today (and I sure wish I could've been) I'd hug him really tight and tell him he's the best Dad in the world.  And it would be the truth.  Love you, Papa.  Hope your day was perfect.

Guest Post: Jessica from Learning Love's Life

Hello, I’m Jessica and I have a little blog called Learning Love’s Life. I’ve been friends with Gabby since my freshmen year of college and she’s not only hilarious but incredibly creative too (which I’m sure is not news to you). Fabulous new shoes like Hunter Wellies or Glitter TOMS: swelling and lack of balance are common side effects of pregnancy and it’s hard to part with our favorite heels. Getting a new pair to battle the elements, or just still be able to have some mommy style after baby is invaluable.

Concert tickets: a date night to see Adele or Mumford & Sons would serve as an excellent adults-only evening out .

New dishes and cooking extras: now that we’re domesticated so to speak, a good place to start is having a chic kitchen. Anthropologie is always a safe bet.

 A kindle or nook: reading is one of my greatest strategies of relaxation. As I’m holding an infant it may become challenging to also hold my latest warm-weather read. Having this small device can be handy during long feedings, cry-athons, or rocking baby to bed in the wee hours of the morning.  A delightful cover doesn't hurt either.

Dramatic accessories: if none of my favorite clothes fit yet, I can still feel like a presentable lady in new diamonds or pearls.

Rayban Wayfarers: new mom= no sleep. To battle the dark undereye circles, a classic pair of sunglasses when I’m running errands with baby will make all the difference in how I face the world.

Rosetta Stone: while many mothers love staying at home with baby, after a few days of cooing over the little joy it's common to begin to crave some adult interaction. Having this little nugget will serve to still make mama feel like a productive adult while also multi-tasking and working to develop baby’s communication skills. Experts say the best time to learn a new language is between birth and age 7!

Last but not least, a giftcard to her favorite store!  Being a new parent means learning that the world no longer revolves around you and your desires.  By gifting this simple piece of plastic, a mom can remember that it's okay for it to be about her every so often... within reason of course.

I hope you enjoyed some of my suggestions, even if you're not expecting they are reasonable gifts to ask for any upcoming birthday, anniversary, holiday, or the run-of-the-mill Tuesday.
