Wanted: H&M 2014 Conscious Collection

I took a temporary departure from our usual format and dedicated today's Wanted exclusively to my favorite pieces from H&M's new Conscious collection…because I'm loosing my mind over it.  It's so chic, so reasonably priced and so high fashion I can hardly stand it.  Mark your calendars for it's launch April 10…if your local H&M isn't one of the 150 stores that carry it, don't fret!  They're making the whole collection available online as well (cue sigh of relief).  Good thing I have the next few weeks to narrow down what to buy because- from a monetary standpoint- I could get myself in all kinds of trouble here (affordable isn't so affordable when you buy 10 pieces).  Decisions, decisions…

1. Boho purse, $69.95  2. Shoulder Adornment, $149  3. White Jumpsuit, $69.96  4. Black Ball gown, $299  5. Fringe Earrings, $17.95  6. Shoulder Bearing Lace Blouse, $69.95  7. Metallic Sheath Dress, $69.95  8. Head Wrap, $17.95

Best Day Ever: Wilson Country Fair

As most of you know, I have somewhat of an extreme vernacular.  In this last weekend alone I saw the "funniest thing I've ever seen", had the "most irritating flight of all time" and ate the "best pizza I've ever had in my life" (though I actually maintain that pizza one is true).  For this reason, I've aptly titled this brand new series (!!!) best day ever...partly because I can't help but talk that way but also because it's what I want this series to chronicle.  Great moments with great friends wearing great clothes in great places...sounds like the best day ever to me!  As an added bonus, I'm finally filling the "personal style post"-shaped hole that's existed in Design Muse for awhile...needless to say I'm pumped about it.

Since our inaugural Best Day Ever post falls on Labor Day, I based it around my favorite end of summer treat....the Wilson County Fair!  I brought one of my nearest, dearest pals along for the (literal!) ride and styled us both for pre-fall fun.  Now...if you're thinking, 'that's not your friend, that's a professional model', then you are exactly half right.  While Nina is technically a model, she's also very much my real life compadre.  Which means I get to pay her in Audrey Hepburn movie marathons instead of cash...it's a great arrangement.

First, let's talk about all our fun.  We rode classic rides, ate ridiculous-but-awesome food (spiral potatoes!  deep fried Oreos!  chocolate covered cheesecake!  and the list goes on...) played hilarious games and people-watched like we've never people-watched before.  It was everything one could hope for in a county fair.

In terms of our outfits, I wanted to keep things fun but casual.  Nina's look was all about balancing trendy with refined so I kept my focus on choosing the right shapes and fabrics.  For example, the chiffon leopard shirt lightened the trendy (but heavy) leather shorts, while the classic Chanel-esque cardigan polished the ensemble as a whole.  See how it all works together?

My outfit, on the other hand, was an exercise in subtly marrying patterns, brights and neutrals.  I paid special attention to scale (big stripes with small leopard pattern) and the use of pops of a single color.

While the majority of our outfits are from previous seasons, we are wearing a few items currently on the market including both our necklaces (Nina's, mine), and my shoes...for more information about other pieces we're wearing feel free to shoot me an e-mail!

A million thanks to Nina and our photographer, the multi-talented Kelsey Wells, for making this idea come to life.  So...what do you guys think of this new series?  Good?  Bad?  Best thing ever?  Comment below and fill me in!

Thank You For Smoking

The fact that Hugh Hefner and I have anything in common whatsoever is a little bit unnerving for me.  I don't like it.  But I'll tell you what I do like, and that's smoking slippers.  Mr. Hefner and I aren't the only ones with an affinity for these stylish flats...Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo, Sofia Coppola and a host of other ladies who are cooler than cool love them too.  The good 'ol smoking slipper is a natural extension of the menswear hurricane fashion forecasts are predicting so get ready to see lots of them very soon.  Here's who I'd pick for my team:

1. Day Dreaming Flats, Joie $175  2. Dashi Smoking Flats, BCBGeneration $89  3. Gale Flats, Macy's $49.99  4. Slipper Pumps, Dorthy Perkins $69  5. Lissa Dolce Vita Shoes, Bloomingdale's $79  6. Tiger Print Lissa Dolce Vita Shoes, Bloomingdale's $79  7. Charles Philip Eula Marble Print Flats, Shopbop $155

Darling Little Dip Dye

I was kind of stoked to see the ombre trend stick around for another season.  I like it in my hair (mostly due to the fact that I have the best stylist in the world), I like it on my clothes and I bet I'd like it on my nails, too if I had the patience for that sort of thing.  One variation I've seen a lot lately is this whole dip dye look...though it's actually more like the love child of ombre and tie dye now that I think about it.  I'm on board with the idea and all but as you can see, I'm most comfortable pairing it with basic shapes.  Somebody's gotta be the star...in this case, I say you let it be that pretty fabric.

1. Dip Dye Maxi Skirt, Topshop $72  2. Layering Tee, J.Crew $29.50  3. Tie and Dye Shopper, Zara $49.90  4. Indigo Cushion, Aura Home $49.95  5. Roll Back Tee, Topshop $36

To Market, To Market

We're heading back from Highpoint Furniture Market today!  In fact, chances are we're en route as you read this very sentence.  Our first market experience was an enlightening one to be sure...we met some wonderful people, soaked up a bit of knowledge and made beautiful discoveries in room after room (after room).  And we barely scratched the surface!  You just can't believe the size of this show...we're talking thousands of vendors in hundreds of buildings and we've got the sore feet to prove it.  It was overwhelming and exciting all at the same time.  I'm super pumped to share some of the treasures we came across, but I need a second to gather my thoughts (and a few hours to look through all the cards and brochures we collected).  In the meantime, here's a few snapshots from a handful of the showrooms we visited.  So pretty, right?

Mirror, Mirror

I had a love at first sight moment with both the earrings and pants in this ensemble...and the rest- as they say- is history.  The color combo is a little unorthodox, but it makes a fun statement!  I'm diggin it.  (P.S.- typing the word 'diggin' just made me laugh so hard...okay, fine...guess you had to be there).
