The Great Family Challenge: Creative S'more & Popcorn Recipes

Thanks so much to everyone who participated in last month's Great Family Challenge!  We had such an awesome time putting together our pumpkin decorating entries and were thrilled to get such wonderful feedback.

This month's challenge was a little more outside the box but I'm so pumped to walk you through it.  I wanted to play around with the idea of re-inventing a classic fall snack...adding to or replacing ingredients, toying with savory/sweet and so on.  After some brainstorming we landed on s'mores and popcorn and decided to make this month a creative s'more and popcorn recipe challenge.

To make things interesting, I cast a really wide net in regards to what we'd consider a "s'more"...the only criteria being 1) you must be able to make them over a bonfire and 2) there must be an element of sandwiching.  As you can imagine, my family took this and really ran with it.  There were no limits whatsoever in regards to the popcorn, except that it should theoretically pair well with the s'more.

I've gotta say, I was extremely impressed with what everyone came up with!  I tried a little bit of each entry and there wasn't a single dud in the bunch.  I know it's tricky since you can't actually taste the contenders, but I'd recommend voting based on creativity of flavor combinations, plated presentation and the overall deliciousness factor.  Better yet- just vote for what you wish you could try most.

Just a reminder, you can vote once per day from now until 11:59 next Thursday (11/26...Thanksgiving!) and we'll announce the winner on Friday.  Happy voting!  And the candidates are...

Come See Us at Gaslamp Too Antiques!

Fun fact: you can now shop with us at Gaslamp Too Antiques in lovely Nashville, Tennessee!  By that I of course mean we have some items for sale there...but hey- we're always up for a shopping trip if you are.  We're so thrilled to partner with Gaslamp because, quite frankly, they're the best of the best (just ask the Nashville Scene Reader's poll in 2015...and 2014...and 2013 for that matter).  There are so many surprisingly affordable, incredibly beautiful pieces available there- literally thousands!  No amount of explanation can do it justice, so in lieu of droning on and on I'll leave it at this: you should go there.  In the meantime, here's just few highlights of our little booth...

I was trying to decide on a favorite piece to highlight but I had a hard time landing on just one.  The table and chairs are custom pieces we whipped up that really turned out to be showstoppers.  The giant Audrey picture is- for obvious reasons- a personal fave of mine.  But if you forced me to pick only one item from our booth to put in my own home it would have to be this CR Laine chair.

The sole reason this chair isn't currently in my home is space constraints (and boy oh boy, did I try).  It's hard to really get a sense of scale in this picture but this is a big chair...I don't care who you are, this chair will dwarf you.  Last one and I'm done- I also really love this Polar Bear print on canvas & gauze by Elizabeth Lucas.  It's such a unique piece and believe you me, the price is right.  All that being said, come visit us!  Gaslamp Too is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00am - 6:00pm and Sunday from Noon to 6:00pm and the address is 128 Powell Place, Nashville TN 37204 (cue "The More You Know" comet trail).  Hope you check it out!

The Foodie Files

I had the great pleasure of checking out the grand opening of Pinewood Social yesterday, Nashville's latest, greatest addition to the foodie scene.  If you're in or around Nashville or planning a trip here anytime soon put it on your list of must visits.  For starters, the atmosphere is killer…very Nashville-esque.

Since I knew the background of Josh Habiger, the chef who developed the menu (and previously worked at critically acclaimed restaurants like Alinea and The Catbird Seat), I had extremely high expectations for the food.  Long story short, it did not disappoint.

Their coffee bar is run by my favorite local haunt, Crema, so I went with my standard order of a delicious hot Cuban coffee (so tasty).

I ordered the lobster roll for lunch and whoa.  It was incredible…so, so fresh!  The menu is extensive and surprisingly affordable.  I can't wait to go back and try a few other things, though I'll be hard pressed not to get the lobster roll again.  They're open very early to very late (7am-1am…pretty incredible, right?) so I'm hoping to get in for a brunch sometime in the very near future.

As if all that wasn't enough, Pinewood Social offers a few other bonuses the rest of Nashville will be hard pressed to compete with…one of which is this in house re-claimed bowling alley!  Come summer, they'll have a pool, cabanas, bocce ball court and all kinds of other goodies.  I told you- it's a gem.  For reservations, call 615-751-8111…I've got a feeling it's about to get real busy so get to dialing!

BIG NEWS!

Life is so crazy, isn't it?  One day it's this, the next day there's an opportunity for it to be something completely different.  On Thursday you're 100% single, come Friday there's someone you just might be interested in.  A moment ago you were unemployed, one phone call later and you're hired.  Life goes in one direction...'til it doesn't anymore.  While sometimes the change is startling and now and then it's downright tragic...occasionally it's exactly what you've been hoping and praying for.  That's where I feel like I'm at today.

Which brings me to my big news.  Here goes...come November 5th Design Muse is opening a brick and mortar location.  We'll be right in Nashville, less than ten minutes from downtown.  Can you even believe that?

I've wanted to take Design Muse to the next level for a long time but I honestly wasn't sure what the logistics of that could possibly look like.  When a sudden opportunity came to open an office in a portion of my cousin Nikki's unbelievably amazing, soon-to-be-opened salon and spa...well...I knew it was my chance.  So that's exactly what I'm going to do.  The office itself will function as a place to meet with home, event and wardrobe styling clients and will double as a small showroom.  Eventually (though hopefully sooner than later) I'm hoping to curate a small, shop-able boutique area in there as well.  The whole thing is ambitious and risky and maybe a little bit crazy but, lets be honest, when's the last time something worth doing was easy?

We've been working non-stop on renovations to the building since we signed the papers at the end of September.  I'm so thrilled with how it's all coming together (as you can imagine, I'll have quite the before and after post for you to check out in a few weeks).  I'll share more about exactly what our service guide is going to look like in the coming weeks, but I just couldn't wait any longer to say how thrilled I am about everything that's developing.  I'm finally gonna get the chance to meet you guys!  Get in your home, style your party, help you navigate your closet.  Freaking out doesn't begin to describe what I'm feeling right now (both freaking out excited and freaking out terrified, to be honest).  More than anything, though, I'm just terribly grateful...for this opportunity, for my amazing parents who are working as our business partners, for my perfect brother who's already logged in a billion hours of moving boxes and painting walls and showing up to make sure Craigslist deals don't end with one of us being abducted, and for every other family member (by blood or by choice) who's chipped in to help.  Every single one of them has been a Godsend.  So that's my news!  Any comments, questions or concerns?  So pumped to hear what you guys think!

The Foodie Files

Bad news, Nashville...one of our most delightful restaurants is closing!  If you live in our area and you've never checked out Rumba, put it on your before-September-30th to do list.  It's always a bummer when inventive places like Rumba close their doors but I was especially disappointed to part ways with one of their signature small plates: The BCBG flatbread.  It's kind of famous around these parts and especially famous in the hearts and minds of my cousin Nikki and I.  So I did what I had to do and test kitchen-ed the living daylights out of the dish.  Turns out, Rumba did most of the work for me by pairing the flavors.  The ingredients are an outside the box combo that might confuse you at first but- I promise you- you'll be hooked after one bite.

Ingredients (per pizza):
1/4 cup blue cheese
1/4 cup sliced grapes
1 oz diced pancetta
1 tsp honey
flatbread

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Saute pancetta over medium high heat until it browns lightly, about 5-7 minutes.  Slice grapes in half.

Layer cheese, pancetta and grapes on flatbread.  Drizzle with honey.

Bake for 5 minutes and serve warm.  I know, this makes you nervous.  It made me nervous too, but I need you to trust me on this one!  It's delicious!

The Catbird Seat

Oh my heavens...I had- legitimately- one of the best experiences of my life this past weekend.  I can not stress this enough.  It was just beyond.  I finally made it to The Catbird Seat, which remains the most intriguing restaurant in Nashville for a variety of reasons.

First of all, it's pretty much impossible to get into which is kind of a phenomenon for our dining scene.  Two hour waits...those we have.  Months of trying to get on a waiting list?  Now, that's new.  Forgive me for letting my inner snob show here but that just creates whole new levels of excitement, does it not?  I mean, we're talking months months of buildup here...the expectation level is so high, what can hold up to that kind of pressure?  Due to a bit of local star power (thanks Nikki) and a fortuitous reservation canceling, we were able to find out last Saturday.  Turns out the answer is watermelon compressed with aquavit, creme fraiche, dill and smoked steelhead roe...that holds up to pressure.  Hot chicken skin with dill, spice and Wonder Bread puree does too...as does egg custard, bourbon barrel aged maple syrup, bacon and thyme.  And I could go on and on and on because every bit of the nine course tasting menu was sublime...like nothing I've ever tasted or imagined in my life.  It was spectacular.  I snapped pictures of a few of the courses to share with you, though obviously no amount of photography could quite do the experience justice.  Honestly, it was one of the best nights of my life (due to both the food and the exceptional company...I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard or genuinely enjoyed myself so much)...one of those memories you know you'll treasure forever.  If you ever, ever, ever have a chance to go I beg of you to snatch it up.

Can't wait to tell you about the rest of my birthday weekend and all the extraordinary people and events that made it so amazing.  Stay tuned!

Fair-ly Fantastic

There's only one day a year where you'll find me welcoming nausea with open arms and that day is quickly approaching.  Soon and very soon (August 12th to be exact) I'm making my way over to the Wilson County Fair for an evening of spiraled potatoes, corn on the cob, deep fried Oreos (don't you dare judge me), games, rides, carnies and more.  Considering it's still a few weeks away I'm almost embarrassingly excited.  I've been filing carnival inspired pieces since the beginning of Summer and just can't wait any longer to share them!  I especially love the Carl Christensen photos (1. & 7.)...in fact, his whole Polaroid and Viewfinder series is downright amazing.  Almost as amazing as the Wilson County Fair.  Almost...

500 Days of Summer

If there's one thing I don't brag on enough, it's Nashville...I seriously love this city.  Sure, it's got it's quirks (I can't always understand them, but more than likely they're saying something nice so I just smile) but I'm from New Jersey...so...I'm not exactly in a position to judge based on a small sampling of the city's most extreme (hello Snooki).  One of my FAVORITE things about Nashville is their summer calendar- whoever is planning these events is on point!  Tonight, for example, is the first Movies in the Park.  Let me paint a quick picture for you of just how that will go down...take a couple hundred (1,000 maybe?  I don't know, I'm bad with numbers) Nashvillians, one very large projector and screen, several food trucks and a killer lineup of movies (one a week every Wednesday) and put it smack dab in the middle of one of our beautiful parks.  Then don't charge anyone to come.  Brilliant, eh?  Tonight's feature is one of my favorites- 500 Days of Summer.  If you haven't seen it and you live in Nashville, get your behind to Centennial Park tonight!  It's quirky and adorable in a way only Zooey Deschanel (the leading lady) can pull of.  In fact, I enjoy it so much just thinking about it's adorableness inspired this post!
